Toilet Training Tips

PullUps BoyRemember, every child is different. The ideal time to start toilet training is different in every case. Some will take months to train. Others will go sailing right through.

Following are some guidelines which you can use to develop your own toilet training routine that works for you and your child.

Be Patient

There will be accidents! But mistakes are what we learn from. Don't get discouraged. Be confident that things will improve with patience.

Be Positive

Say "You'll do better next time" or "Don't worry about the accidents, we'll get it right soon". Keep building confidence. Encourage those Big Kid feelings.

Let your child set the pace

Trust your child. A toddler really does want to grow up and become a Big Kid. Don't try to force them to learn too fast. Support them with the encouragement and positive feedback they need.

Look for the signs of readiness

Generally a child will show signs of toilet training readiness between 18 months and 3 years of age, but don't be concerned if your child is earlier or later than this every child is different and will start when developmentally ready.

Getting started

A great way to start is by getting a potty and buying Big Kid pants like Pull-Ups Toilet Training Pants. Huggies Pull-Ups Toilet Training Pants now have a 'feel wet to learn' wetness liner. Your child will momentarily feel wet before the moisture is drawn away, helping your child FEEL the difference between wet and dry, just long enough to learn. There are also fun designs on Pull-Ups Toilet Training Pants that fade when wet. This provides a technique you and your child can use together to help them learn to keep their pants dry.

Working through the stages

Work at a pace set by your child.  Provide plenty of encouragement and praise and be consistent with your approach.  Rewards and prizes can work wonders so find what motivates your child. A favourite treat, small prizes, or a progress chart will help keep your child interested.

Successfully Trained!

PullUps GirlThis is an important accomplishment for both of you, so be sure to mark it with a special celebration. The most meaningful reward your child can get may not be a present but extra time with you.
